Guatemala – Day 2

Our amazing team has been able to do some cool things each day before heading out to serve. Every morning, we get to hear a student led devotional and have a brief time of praise and worship. It is very refreshing to start each day together in the presence of the Lord. In addition to volunteering to speak to the team and lead worship, each student signed up to provide a part of the sack lunches we prepared today for Foundation Communities. It has been incredible to se each and every person be so willing to step up and volunteer themselves. Today we were a force to be reckoned with, packing lunches for 45 people, and a lot of extras! Each sack contained a sandwich, chips, piece of fruit, and a cookie. Each bag was hand decorated with a sweet message of encouragement.  We also brought salad, drinks, and lots of games to play with the residents. One of our students even brought a photo booth! It was a very special treat for the people there. Once we were all at the apartment building, we set out the food near their lounge area and served the residents as they made their way down the line. Meanwhile, several students were setting up the photo booth in the main lobby. For the next few hours we spent time with the residents, who got to play games, eat lots of good food, and get a bunch of photos made.

Please continue to pray for our team and leaders as we hit the halfway mark of the week. We want to maintain the high energy we’ve had so far all the way to the end! Furthermore, please pray for the residents at Foundation Communities and this amazing organization as a whole. Tomorrow, we will continue our work at Down Home Ranch by clearing out a pasture, so pray for lasting strength and cool weather! Thank you for your continued support.

Guatemala – Day 1

Today we served at Down Home Ranch which is a residential facility for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Is is a beautiful place with all sorts of activities for the residents, who they call Ranchers. When we arrived at the ranch, we split into two groups. One group hung out with the Ranchers in their dining hall while the other went to clean out their golf shed and game shed. The Rancher group had a jam session (2 ranchers had guitars!), did arts and crafts, played games, and did puzzles. The clean up group emptied out each shed, cleaned and organized the supplies, and put them back neatly with the help of some Ranchers. Next, we got to eat lunch together with the Ranchers then we split up again. This time, the shed group hung out with the Ranchers while the other went to help with a horsemanship class. The shed group set up a volleyball net and played volleyball with the Ranchers. The second group helped the Ranchers brush and clean the horses, then walked them through a small obstacle course. Finally, we finished out the day by playing volleyball with the Ranchers and doing karaoke together.

It was so amazing to see such a wonderful organization and tight knit community. Today we ask that you pray for the Ranchers and staff at Down Home Ranch and pray for our service tomorrow with Foundation Communities.

Guatemala – Day 0

Team Guat is ready for our week of service here in Austin. To kick things off we spent an evening together at Nurse Rich’s house on Sunday night. We hung out together outside and enjoyed basketball, 9 square, and Spikeball. After that, we had a delicious taco dinner together and bonded around the table. Finally, we finished up the night with worship and a short devotional. Before we left though, Coach Pete and Nurse Carrie gave Jenny and Drew Aldridge a beautiful painting of their husband and father, Philip. Phil was truly the heart behind our group. Last year, our week in Guatemala was one of the last things he did on this earth before passing away. Mrs. Vaughn’s beautiful painting of Phil and a little boy from Eagle’s Best is so lifelike and captures the spirit of the trip.

The next day we prepared our hearts to serve at the school-wide chapel. Seeing everyone gathered together and hearing the kindergarteners sing “Love In Any Language” is always a treat. After chapel, we all went to Mighty Fine to get some burgers and eat together. This first meal of the week together is a tradition set by Phil. He was always insistent that the first meal in Guatemala would be his treat.

Even though we aren’t at the Nest, we are excited to see God do life-changing work in our very own city. This week we will be serving at Down Home Ranch, Foundation Communities, and Voigt Elementary. Down Home Ranch is a residential facility for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We will be helping them clear out a pasture and clean up around their facility. Foundation Communities is an apartment complex that provides housing for low income families. We will helping them this Wednesday by providing lunch for the residents. On Friday, we will be serving at Voigt Elementary School and donating some books to the kids. Your prayers are always appreciated and we hope you will join us in this week of service by supporting our mission through prayer. Please pray for Eagle’s Nest children and staff, our wonderful leaders and team of students, the residents of Foundation Communities and Down Home Ranch, and the kids at Voigt.
